Recycling paper conserves natural resources, saves energy, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and keeps landfill space free for other types of trash that cannot be recycled. Recycling one ton of paper can save 17 trees, 7,000 gallons of water, 380 gallons of oil, 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space and 4,000 kilowatts of energy.
- Paper recycling reduces sulphur dioxide emissions by eliminating the use of coal which is used in the paper industry to generate power, hence promoting less use of fossil fuel.
- Every time paper recycles, the fibre becomes shorter, weaker and more brittle. In general, paper can be recycled up to seven times before it must be discarded.
It is estimated that by 2025, the demand for paper would be close to 25 million metric tonnes and is not an easily achievable task for the Indian paper industry to meet the demands with just virgin paper given the limited and ever decreasing amount of indigenous raw materials required like trees, coal, water, etc. The only way to achieve this in a sustainable way is to reuse.
